Survivor: Vanuatu Episode 5

Long time no write.

Kris emails and says, "Wow!! Congrats. I kept going over to the site to read the latest Survivor episode and what do you know? She was born right on Survivor night. I think this means something."

Thank you. Not only was she born on Survivor night, but she knew what time it was. Around noon the doctor inspects everything and says we were looking at having the baby around six. Survivor comes on at seven here which means we would've missed it. Well little miss Katarina obviously knew that because she kicked it into high gear and was born at 4:01. She got cleaned up and checked out and we watched episode five as a family. Isn't that the sweetest, most obsessive thing you've ever heard?

So, yeah, I'm a week late. We'll just go with the super-abridged version.

Awkward man-hugs all around!

Day 11: Each tribe has to choose a leader. Sarge and Scout are selected. There's an earthquake on the island. That was cool.

The castaways meet with Jeff. One "chief" will divide the teams, mixing the genders. The other chief will choose the tribe he or she wants to live with. They Ro Sham Bo and Sarge wins the option. He decides to pick his tribe at the end so Scout will be the one splitting them up.

The groups end up like this: Rory, Eliza, Bubba, Leann, and Ami versus Chad, Julie, Chris, Twila, John.

Sarge naturally picks the team with more men and less Rory. Since Lisa was the odd person out she also gets to choose her own tribe and she sticks with Scout.

The Reward Challenge is to dive for thirteen markers tied along a vertical rope under water. The deepest one is thirty feet down. Oh my. Whichever tribe retrieves the most in ten minutes wins Pringles and beer. You read that right.

Bubbusted.

It comes down to Chris against Ami. He gets his but she doesn't make it back up in time. New Lopevi wins.

They frolic at a waterfall. Man, this is one high-quality bikini episode. Twila loves her new tribe as she and Chris talk construction. Please don't let them turn into a very-poor-man's Rob and Amber.

Yasur is Yellow so I can keep them apart. Eliza and Lisa openly welcome Bubba and Rory but Ami scolds them for showing all their food secrets. She wants the women to stay together.

At the Immunity Challenge Bubba is caught on camera saying, "Chris! Think about the merge!" This is probably why they call him Bubba.

It's a relay race to get pieces of an outrigger canoe from the jungle. The watercraft is then assembled and two people paddle out to get a flag and bring it back to shore.

Some of the
worst paddling ever.

It comes down to John smoking Rory in his leg of the race with superior knot-untying.

Jeff calls out Rory for letting them fall behind and says Bubba and Ami provided "some of the worst paddling I've ever seen." Feel the sting of Probst.

Back at camp Ami says she heard Bubba signaling Chris and she's voting for him. Bubba tells us he was trying to get the men to realize they should throw the Challenge so they could vote out a woman, instead of winning and having the women of Yasur vote off a man. Interesting. At least that makes sense. He's still dense though.

Eliza wants to keep the two men around for their strength. Bubba and Rory hug, pray and say they love each other.

At Council Ami talks about busting Bubba and he confesses the whole thing, including his rationale. Ami tells him they weren't going to vote for him until that.

Pringles: It's what's for dinner.

We see Rory and Bubba vote for each other. So much for that love.

The tally is Bubba, Rory, Bubba, Bubba, Bubba. Bubba-bye.

Next time on…Survivor: Rory makes his plea with a "cheesy" speech, and nude sunbathing! That's so exciting I think I'll write about it right…now.

Enough of you asked about it to put episode 4's puzzle solution here.

First a hint: Try to divide the 16 squares into four mini-squares of four tiles each. If you get each quadrant to fit the rules you can then try to put them together into one big group.

And if that isn't enough, the step-by-step solution is between the stars.

* For simplicity's sake instead of colors and symbols we used letters and numbers. So my tiles were marked A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, etc. up to D4.
Put the four A's in the upper left corner, the B's in the upper right, C's in lower left, and D's in lower right.
Take A 1&2 and switch them with D 1&2. Do the same thing for B & C.
Now you focus on each quadrant. In the upper left put the two A's diagonal from each other. This makes the two D's diagonal as well (A4 D2 on top, D1 A3 on the bottom for example).
Notice this quadrant now fits the rules (no duplicate letters or numbers in each row or column). Do the same for each of the other three quadrants.
Now you'll notice for the entire board that no letters are duplicated in any row or column, so we focus on the numbers.
Rotate the tiles in the upper left quadrant so you have one of each number in the top row. For example, if you have A4 and D2 in the top row of the upper left quadrant, you could complete the top row with B3 and C1. This would give you a second row of D1, A3, C2 and B4 and now the top two rows follow all the rules.
Take the sequence of letters in the top row and reverse it in the bottom row, but make sure you don't duplicate a number in the same column. In our example we have A, D, B, C across the top. That means we want C, B, D, A across the bottom. Since we have a 1 and 4 in the far right column we use A2 in the bottom right (instead of A1). C3 then ends up in the bottom left corner (instead of C4). Arrange the third row so you still have your matching letters diagonal from each other in the bottom quadrants and you're done! Our example ends up like this:

A4 D2 B3 C1
D1 A3 C2 B4
B2 C4 A1 D3
C3 B1 D4 A2

The real puzzle is, how on earth did an Eliza-led team solve that??*
