Survivor: Palau Episode 10

A new Survivor joins an elite but very disliked club.

But first, after Episode 9, Liz writes in and says:

Donuts, cookies and pizza are the only enticements these people need to give up a million dollars?? I would have held out for at least a t-bone and fifth of Jack Daniels, but still would have had my doubts after 13 fish, a lobster, and rum in a coconut! Where do they find these people?

It's true. Koror never went more than 24 hours without a huge meal, and even Stephenie got to eat her fill of Joe's fish just the night before the Challenge. I think all the Kororians got so used to winning they forgot to fear Tribal Council. Steph should have known better but it sounds like she felt painfully guilty even before the pepperoni aftertaste left her mouth.

On to S10.10 and Janu is angry that no one told her Coby was going. Gee, maybe that would be because you would have acted like this. Katie talks to Jenn about Janu being "creepy" at Tribal Council and Janu overhears it. She goes off on Katie in front of everyone. That should reunite her with Coby really quick.

However, Gregg says Janu has a role in his strategy. He wants the more powerful Stephenie to go first.

The Reward Challenge splits the tribe into two groups of four. They have to build a tower out in the water one piece at a time, climb it, and bring back a flag. There are six total parts to the tower. The winners get a feast with indigenous people.

It's Steph, Ian, Katie and Jenn vs. Tom, Gregg, Janu and Caryn. The base of the tower has to be put into place underwater. Caryn and Janu just watch as Tom and Gregg do the diving. Janu finally joins in and they get the piece in place for the early lead.

"Talk to the hand" is universal.

You know, this Challenge wasn't very exciting. Skipping ahead, Tom's team never lost its lead and they took the prize. Observations: 1) Katie should have been arrested for possession of crack. 2) Stephenie loses so much she must be a Cubs fan.

The feast is a relaxing time for the victors. Caryn says there was no talk of strategy. Everyone is stuffing themselves until Janu says she's feeling sick. Sure enough, she pukes up her meal! Old habits die hard, huh?

They bring back a whole bag of food for the others. Guess there's no leftover police this season.

As the hungry ones eat, Janu reaches in and grabs some of the food! Apparently she's thin in the brain too.

Treemail arrives for the Immunity Challenge and it's a small metal grate. Stephenie says they'll probably be in a cage underwater. Heh.

Sure enough, they have to stand shoulder-deep in the ocean underneath a larger version of the grate. As the tide rises, the water covers them and the last person to stay under wins.

But wait, there's more. The first person to quit the Challenge will be abandoned on a different beach for the night. They'll get flint, steal, a machete and fishing gear. So, basically it's like a trip back to Ulong.

Janu is shivering and Jeff asks if she's getting cold and she says yes. He asks if it'd be warmer on the other beach by herself than in that water and she says yes. He then asks if she's panicking, and she again says yes. And then she quits. Elapsed time? Six whole minutes.

Keep that sequence in mind.

"Ha ha, Janu's going to die!"

Jeff asks Janu if she knows how to make fire. The others are oblivious to her and laugh and talk amongst themselves. Jeff scolds them for not caring about her fate.

Caryn is the next to quit. She lasted 55 minutes, but they aren't even underwater yet. Katie quits. Jenn, Steph, and Ian all have to hold their breath. The women both quit, but Ian is able to come back up and find more air.

Gregg is the first man to bail. Tom makes a "hand snorkel," and it works! Ian goes out and Tom wins again.

Probably not the best move on Tom's part. He doesn't need Immunity. He should have let his buddy have it to take the target off his back a little bit.

Janu is carted off and the experiment begins anew. She gets the flint to spark but can't get anything to ignite. Finally, after dark, she gets fire. Well done. She says this is the happiest she's been since she got on the island. Better late than never I guess.

Back at Kamp Koror, Tom and Gregg talk. Tom says the girls all want Janu out, but Gregg wants Stephenie first. He says her lasting this long is a "story developing" that needs to be stopped. It's a good point.

Stephenie says they're telling her it's Janu but she thinks it's her because people are avoiding her.

Tribal Council. Coby and his tight, striped tank top come in. Tom says eliminating threats is part of the game. Gregg says they want people there who won't try as hard. Basically he gives away their whole strategy.

All hail the hand-snorkel!

Janu says there's no reason to keep her. "They can get rid of me." She admits she wants to leave. Stephenie is beside herself.

"It kills me," Steph says. "I'd kill to be here." Choking back tears she adds, "I guess I showed too much heart, too much will." Tom says Stephenie would be welcome in his firehouse, but Survivor is different.

Jeff asks Janu what she's hoping for. She says she wants to be voted out. Jeff asks how asking to be voted out is different from quitting on her own. Janu says there is no difference. She pauses and continues that she'd be willing to "lay down my torch" so Stephenie can stay in the game. Jeff asks if she's quitting and she says yes. And she does in fact quit.

Holy cow. Does Jeff have his law degree yet?

Next time on…Survivor: Stephenie tries to form an all-woman alliance. "You think I'm a threat?" she asks the camera. "I'll show you how threatening I am."

So how about that? Jeff rigged a Tribal Council! He totally walked Janu through the process of quitting, just to keep crowd-favorite Stephenie in the game.

In fact, it could be argued he used his Jeffi Mind Tricks on Janu twice.

"This is not the torch
you're looking for."

Are you cold?
Yes.
Would a desolate beach be warmer?
Yes.
Are you panicking?
Yes.

Do you want to get voted out?
Yes.
Is that the same as quitting?
Yes.
Do you quit?
Yes.

I'm as big a Jeff fan as they come, but I'm sure what to think about that. But, hey, it's only Janu. She and Coby can bitterly eat tiny portions of food together.

Are you done?
Yes.
